Dr Hays, a native of Hollandale, Mississippi, graduated from Baylor School in Chattanooga, Tennessee. He is board certified in internal medicine and cardiovascular disease. Dr. Hays completed his undergraduate degree at the University of Virginia and earned his medical degree at the University of Mississippi Medical School. Upon graduation from medical school, Hays completed an internship at the University of Pennsylvania and residency at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota. After serving two years in the United States Air Force as chief of medicine of the 7206 Dispensary in Athens, Greece, Dr. Hays finished his cardiology fellowship at the University of Mississippi Medical Center, where he now is a clinical associate professor of medicine.
In 1973, Dr. Hays co-founded The Jackson Heart Clinic and the Mississippi Heart Institute and helped with the establishment of the St. Dominic cardiac catherization lab. At St. Dominic's, he has served as chief of the medical staff, a member of the hospital board, a member of the health services board and is currently on the foundation board. He has published and presented papers and projects relating to cardiovascular health and is a fellow of the American College of Cardiology, American College of Physicians and the American Heart Association, where he served as president of local Board of Directors. He is also a member of the Central Medical Society, Mississippi State Medical Association and the American Medical Association.
Dr. Hays was named a Health Care Hero in 2012 and has received the Golden Heart Award from the American Heart Association. He is a founding member of Annadale Golf Club and past president of the River Hills Tennis Club. Dr. Hays is a Deacon of First Baptist Church and served on a medical mission trip to Haiti in 2012.
Dr. Hays was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Preston Hays, and they have 2 children, Dr. J. Clay Hays, Jr. and his wife, Elizabeth, and Mary Preston Dubberly and her husband, John, and 4 grandchildren, Tyler Hays, Wilson Hays, Hays Dubberly, and Preston Dubberly. He is married to Margaret Heard Walker, Leland, Mississippi.
